Sparkling wines: Toast in style
Miniature encyclopedia of sparkling wines: What to select and how to serve it
Sparkling wines, Sekt, aerated sparkling wines or “Champagnes”? Most people cannot even tell them apart. But at the same time, they often want the same thing - a delicious wine with a cork and small bubbles for those festive occasions, celebrations and to toast an event. So what’s the difference? Sparkling wines are the name used for alcoholic beverages that are produced by primary or secondary fermentation of wines.
This term is regularly confused with Champagne. However, the appellation belongs exclusively to sparkling wines originating in the French wine region of Champagne. All other sparkling wines are indicated as Sekt, excluding the original Champagne, for example the well-known Bohemia Sekt or Mucha Sekt. Aerated sparkling wine is a lower quality, cheaper wine that is artificially carbonated. It has nothing to do with Sekt.

How do you serve Sekt? Chilled in flutes
Let the wine rest and stand in a cool place. Properly opening the bottle will prevent half the contents from spilling on the floor. After twisting the wire clip holding the cork in place, tilt the bottle at about a 45 degree angle. Rotate the cork in one direction, putting only slight pressure on it until it loosens. Have the glasses ready to pour the sparkling wine immediately after opening the bottle.
