RUMS: For connoisseurs and also in cocktails
Types of rum: classified by color and origin
The first thing that distinguishes them is the color. Dark rums excel in intense color, flavor and the scent of molasses. They’re best drunk neat so you can enjoy the taste. That’s why these rums are ideal as a gift for connoisseurs that enjoy good alcohol. Gold rums are a bit lighter. They can be enjoyed straight while also suitable in cocktails. Dark and gold rums acquire their colors from aging in oak barrels, but sometimes they mature in bourbon or cognac barrels, too. Some heavy dark rums mature for 20 or 30 years. White rums have a less pronounced, lighter taste and are best suited for cocktails. They either spend no time maturing or mature at most for three years. Because maturing just in rum barrels adds color, white rums can still be filtered.
Rums go magnificently well with other flavors. Spiced and flavored rums are enriched with the flavor of spices, fruits or herbs. The most common flavors are vanilla, cinnamon, cloves or nutmeg. Other popular rum flavors include coffee, honey or coconut. If you are buying rum as a gift, first make sure you know which rum he or she likes. Some like only the pure taste of dark rums with no flavoring at all.
Rums can also be categorized from their history, with the classifications listed below: Spanish rums are made with molasses. They are light and sweet with not so strong a flavor. British rums are heavier and have a richer taste that is sometimes sweetened or enhanced with spices. They are more suitable for longer aging. French rums are made directly from sugar cane juice. This is reflected in their lighter taste, with fruit tones also evident.

Rum from Czech Basin with a scent of Caribbean
Rums started becoming popular in the Czech Republic only in the 20th century, reaching new heights in recent years. Our selection includes Božkov Republica Exclusive, with blends from various Caribbean rums up to eight years old.
Did you know that...

true rum is made from sugar cane?
That is why our Czech “tuzemák” does not count among rums. Its main component is alcohol from molasses left over from the processing of sugar beet or cereals. Then the essence of rum is added to it. Nonetheless, such a process does not detract from its popularity. For instance, Božkov Original still remains the best-selling spirit in the Czech Republic.
How to drink rum: Temperature and the right glass are critical
Like any other quality alcoholic drink, rum is best when it has not been chilled. So serve it at room temperature. You can hold the glass in your hands for a few moments before you take that first sip. Lower temperatures dampen the taste and don’t let you enjoy a wonderful rum to the maximum. Therefore, never put ice with rum. The ideal rum glass has a conical shape that tapers upward. It lets the taste develop in just the right way so the rum retains its aroma longer.

Although rum is drunk in one gulp at many small Czech pubs, it’s definitely not the right thing to do. Rum’s aroma and flavor needs to be savored. First, sniff the rum about 4 centimeters from the edge of the cup. Then take a sip and let it roll on your tongue for a while. This lets you discover all the tones rum hides.
