Miniature encyclopedia of sparkling wines: What to select and how to serve it

Sparkling wines, Sekt, aerated sparkling wines or “Champagnes”? Most people cannot even tell them apart. But at the same time, they often want the same thing - a delicious wine with a cork and small bubbles for those festive occasions, celebrations and to toast an event. So what’s the difference? Sparkling wines are the name used for alcoholic beverages that are produced by primary or secondary fermentation of wines.

This term is regularly confused with Champagne. However, the appellation belongs exclusively to sparkling wines originating in the French wine region of Champagne. All other sparkling wines are indicated as Sekt, excluding the original Champagne, for example the well-known Bohemia Sekt or Mucha Sekt. Aerated sparkling wine is a lower quality, cheaper wine that is artificially carbonated. It has nothing to do with Sekt.

Chateau Bzenec Brut was the first ever sparkling wine made in Moravia, originating in 1875 from Riesling grapes. Even today, it is still produced by traditional fermentation in the bottle.

A large number of producers also make non-alcoholic sparkling wines. You can choose white or pink non-alcoholic wine with a drier and sweeter taste. Even celebrating youngsters will be delighted by what’s locally called “champagne soda”.

How do you serve Sekt? Chilled in flutes

Let the wine rest and stand in a cool place. Properly opening the bottle will prevent half the contents from spilling on the floor. After twisting the wire clip holding the cork in place, tilt the bottle at about a 45 degree angle. Rotate the cork in one direction, putting only slight pressure on it until it loosens. Have the glasses ready to pour the sparkling wine immediately after opening the bottle.

The ideal temperature for serving sparkling wine is 3-7 °C. Serve it in long narrow “flutes”, pouring until half-full. This allows the bubbles to rise more slowly and lets you enjoy your toast for a longer time.

Sekts and the labeling on the bottle

  • Demi-sec

    Demi-sec

Sparkling wines are classified by sugar content. The applicable dosage for demi-sec wine ranges between 33 and 50 grams per liter. These are sweeter wines.

  • Brut

    Brut

Brut has less than 15 grams of sugar per liter in the bottle. It lies between the very dry and semi-dry/sweeter Sekts.

  • Doux

    Doux

These Sekts are among the sweetest of all. The sugar content is greater than 50 grams per liter. They go well with desserts, for example.
