Did you know that no two brands of whiskey taste the same? This is especially true for “single malt” whiskeys made from one type of malt. The quality of the barley malt used, how it is dried and now the mash matures in the barrels all have an impact on the final taste. For example, whiskey aged in bourbon or sherry barrels has intriguing flavors.

To get the perfect enjoyment of whiskey, roll each sip for a few seconds in your mouth, like you are chewing it. This completely opens up the flavor in it. It is also a good idea to add a little water to the whiskey to release the taste and also to protect your taste buds.

Straight (single-malt) whiskey is known for their original taste, appreciated by experts. It varies according to the specific distillery and the year the whiskey was produced. Blended whiskeys have a finer taste popular among customers. Their taste is constant thanks to the opportunities from controlled blending.

How do you serve whiskey? Ideally without ice

Serving an alcoholic beverage correctly makes the taste of each one stand out better. And whiskey is no exception. Forget the classic small shots to down it in a single swallow. Whiskey should be savored, rolling each sip on the tongue. Ideally use short, wide whiskey tumblers with a rough bottom to enjoy it. Even more suitable are tulip glasses, named for the narrow neck shaped like a tulip.

A common error when serving whiskey is to add ice to the glass. The lower temperature dulls the drink’s already delicate taste. So if you desire to make the most of your favorite whiskey, it’s enough to serve it at room temperature from a (home) bar counter.

Whiskey types

Scotch

Most often double-distilled, it is made in Scotland from water and Scottish malted barley, dried mostly with peat smoke. Scotch should mature for at least three years in oak barrels.

Irish

Malt is dried for Irish whiskey without it ever touching the peat fire smoke. Thus, the flavor has no smoky tone. The mash is triple-distilled and kept in oak barrels for at least three years to mature. Irish whiskey can only be made in Ireland.

Canadian

Mostly blended whisky with a delicate taste and a hint of caramel, it usually contains more than 50% corn, while the rest is grain. It has to mature for at least four years and must be produced in Canada.

The oldest recorded production of whisky dates back to 1494. 150 years later, this “fiery” water was first taxed by the Scottish Parliament.
